Last September, the FN SCAR made its virtual debut in Fortnite’s popular battle royale mode as the legendary variant of the common assault rifle. Next summer, the SCAR will make its Nerf debut as the “AR-L Blaster,” the first Nerf gun to come out of the partnership between Epic Games and Hasbro. (Look out for a whole line of them in 2019.)
The toy version of the gas-operated self-loading rifle will appear on shelves on June 1st, 2019, and it will cost $49.99, IGN reports. The AR-L Blaster features “rapid-fire motorized blasting and flip-up sights,” presumably to help players hit each other more easily with foam darts.
The Nerf gun is modeled from Fortnite’s assault rifle, which happens to look a lot like its real-life metal cousin: the Fabrique National Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle (FN SCAR, for short), which was created as part of a US Special Operations Command competition in 2004. It made its wartime entrance in 2009, with America’s 75th Ranger Regiment being the first big unit to go into combat wielding the weapons. (That version will set you back $3,4999.)
What’s interesting is that most Nerf guns don’t look a lot like any real weapons. The last video game guns Nerf announced it was turning into plastic, for example, came from Blizzard’s Overwatch, which has an aesthetic that’s nearly as cartoonish as the one in Fortnite. It is the first gun? D.Va’s light blaster, which is bubblegum pink, round, and adorable.
