This was tweeted by a developer working at Epic Games. 'Erebus' in Unreal Engine 4 is the codename for the Switch version of Fortnite.
FYI references to 'Erebus' in UE4 code only refer to the codename for the Switch version of @FortniteGame before we announced it.— arjan (@arjanbrussee) August 30, 2018
This news was leaked and announced on Twitter based on the discussion IGN had initiated originally regarding the spreading rumour that Some "Internet Detectives" already discovered the new code, which was same as the Fortnite Switch version, turned out to be PS5's alias. The news from IGN is quoted down below:
If Internet sleuths are to be believed, the PlayStation 5's codename is 'Erebus'.
Detailed by ResetEra user Gemüsepizza, two lists of platforms in the Unreal Engine 4's backend now includes a mention of Erebus. Erebus seemingly wasn't a part of these lists until the latest update to the engine. One list is included below:
A few extra factors have contributed to why people think this could refer to PS5. First, the name itself: Erebus is a Greek deity that personified darkness. More pertinently, he's pointed to as one of the first five (get it?) beings in existence.
The last three PlayStation releases have had Greek-themed codenames: the PS4 was Orbis, PS VR was Morpheus, and PS4 Pro was Neo. It's worth pointing out that some think the continuation of the Greek codenames means Erebus is a new model of PS4, rather than a brand new generation.
For those wondering why they've jumped to the conclusion that this is a PlayStation and not an Xbox, that's because we've already heard multiple reports of Scarlett, the alleged next-generation Xbox available as both a traditional console and streaming box.
It's become apparent this year that next-generation consoles are being prepared. From the multiple reports of games being made for them and leaks saying they'll arrive in 2020, their release is inevitable at this point.
What they'll actually be is a different question. Many think they'll incorporate game-streaming - which we're not entirely happy with - but that the likes of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes is the future of gaming, and could end the traditional console generation cycle.
